Embarking on the OB GYN clerkship at Holy Cross marked a turning point in my medical education. It was more than just a rotation; it became a journey of discovering a deep passion for women's health. This experience reshaped how I view the female body, enhanced my self-awareness, and strengthened my commitment to helping women feel comfortable and empowered in their own skin.
Discovering a Passion for Women’s Health
From the first day at Holy Cross, I felt drawn to the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The complexity and beauty of women's health issues sparked my curiosity. I quickly realized that OB GYN was not just about delivering babies or performing surgeries—it was about supporting women through some of the most significant moments of their lives.
The supportive environment at Holy Cross played a crucial role in nurturing this passion. The staff, from attending physicians to nurses, welcomed me warmly and encouraged me to ask questions and take on responsibilities. Their positive interactions made the learning process engaging and less intimidating.
Growing Comfort with Women’s Bodies and Self-Awareness
One of the most profound changes during this clerkship was my growing comfort with women's bodies. Initially, I felt a natural hesitation when discussing sexual health or examining patients. Over time, this discomfort faded as I gained knowledge and confidence.
This journey also heightened my self-awareness. I became more conscious of how women perceive their bodies and the importance of fostering a safe space where they can express concerns without judgment. I want every woman to feel comfortable and proud of her body, and this experience strengthened my resolve to contribute to that goal.

Key Experiences That Shaped My Learning
Several moments during the clerkship stand out as defining experiences. Delivering my first baby was unforgettable. The mix of excitement, responsibility, and awe was overwhelming but deeply rewarding. It was a hands-on lesson in the miracle of birth and the importance of calm, clear communication.
Performing six cesarean sections further solidified my skills and confidence in surgical procedures. Each case was unique, requiring careful attention and teamwork. One particularly intense moment was during an eight-hour myomectomy, where I closed a port site and, despite the long hours, remained focused. Unfortunately, I also experienced a needle stick injury during this procedure, which reminded me of the importance of safety protocols and vigilance.
Beyond surgeries, observing amniotic fluid testing opened my eyes to the diagnostic side of OB GYN. Seeing how this test helps assess fetal health added a new layer of understanding to prenatal care.
Building Relationships with the Team
The people I met during this rotation made a lasting impact. I became friends with the labor and delivery nurses and the Mother-Baby nurse, whose support and camaraderie enriched my experience. Their insights into patient care and hospital dynamics were invaluable.
I also prepared a presentation on dysbiosis, a topic often considered low yield but personally fascinating. This project helped me dive deeper into the microbiome's role in women's health and sparked interesting discussions with the team.

Insights on Sexual Health and Body Image
This clerkship expanded my understanding of sexual health beyond the clinical symptoms. I learned how deeply sexual health and body image affect women's overall well-being. Many patients shared their struggles with self-esteem and body confidence, which highlighted the need for compassionate care.
I want to help women feel comfortable in their bodies by promoting open conversations and education. This means addressing not only physical health but also emotional and psychological aspects.
A Natural Fit in OB GYN
Throughout the rotation, I noticed that everything in OB GYN came naturally to me. Whether it was clinical skills, patient communication, or teamwork, I felt aligned with this specialty. This natural fit motivates me to pursue further training and contribute meaningfully to women's health.

Final Thoughts on the OB GYN Clerkship Experience
My time at Holy Cross was transformative. It deepened my passion for women's health, sharpened my clinical skills, and taught me the value of empathy and support. The challenges I faced, including the needle stick injury, only strengthened my resolve to provide safe and compassionate care. I came to love and respect the body of a female more and be comfortable in your sexual and gynecological; health.
